Our Mission
Moving is one of the most expensive and stressful events in a person's life. The American Moving and Storage Association estimates that approximately 31 million Americans relocate each year, and the average interstate move costs between $4,000 and $5,600 depending on distance and home size. Despite those stakes, most people rely on a single quote from a single mover — because comparing options across different moving methods has historically been difficult, time-consuming, and privacy-invasive.
MoveCostMatrix was built to change that. We provide a free, instant, side-by-side comparison of every major moving method — DIY truck rental, portable moving containers, and full-service professional movers — for any route, in any supported region. No email required. No data collection. No hidden upsells. Just transparent, data-driven estimates that help you plan and negotiate with confidence.
The Problem We Solve
The moving industry's dominant business model is lead generation. Most "free moving cost calculators" on the internet are actually lead capture forms. You fill out your details — name, email, phone number, address — and within minutes, your information is sold to three to seven moving companies who call, text, and email you aggressively. A 2023 Consumer Reports investigation found that some lead-generation sites sell consumer data to up to 12 companies per submission, resulting in dozens of unsolicited calls within 24 hours.
We took the opposite approach. MoveCostMatrix is a tool, not a funnel. Everything runs in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your origin, destination, and cost estimates never leave your device. We do not sell leads, accept commissions from moving companies, or bias our results toward any provider. When we recommend movers on the homepage, those recommendations are based on regional service availability and reputation — not advertising relationships.
How Our Calculator Works
The calculator uses a three-stage process to generate estimates:
Stage 1: Distance Calculation
When you enter an origin and destination, the calculator first attempts to resolve them as postal codes. For US ZIP codes, Canadian postal codes, UK postcodes, and Australian postcodes, we use the zippopotam.us API to obtain geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude). We then calculate the great-circle distance using the Haversine formula and apply a 20% road-adjustment factor to account for the fact that roads do not follow straight lines. This adjustment is based on research showing that actual driving distances average 1.2 to 1.4 times the great-circle distance for most North American routes.
For city names or postal codes in unsupported formats, the calculator uses a deterministic hash-based algorithm to generate a proxy distance. This fallback ensures the tool always returns a useful estimate, even when exact coordinates are unavailable. A distance slider lets you fine-tune the result manually.
Stage 2: Region Detection and Cost Multipliers
The calculator detects your region from the origin and destination entries. We support five regions, each with a cost multiplier that adjusts the base US rates to reflect local market conditions:

Stage 3: Three-Tier Estimate
The calculator applies three per-mile rate models, each derived from different data sources:
- DIY Truck Rental — $0.80/mile: Based on published one-way rental rates from U-Haul, Penske, and Budget Truck, including base fees, mileage charges, and typical insurance premiums. Does not include fuel, tolls, or lodging.
- Moving Containers — $1.50/mile: Based on published pricing from PODS, 1-800-PACK-RAT, and U-Pack for standard container moves, including delivery, pickup, and transport fees.
- Professional Movers — $2.50/mile: Based on industry-average rates from the American Moving and Storage Association, combined with published tariff rates from United Van Lines, Atlas Van Lines, and Mayflower Transit. Includes basic packing and loading for a standard two-bedroom home.
All rates are reviewed and updated quarterly based on published rate schedules and industry survey data.
Our Data Sources
We draw on multiple public and industry data sources to ensure our estimates are grounded in reality:
- American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA): Industry average cost data for professional movers, including per-mile and per-pound rate benchmarks.
- Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA): Regulatory guidance, published tariff structures, and the annual Household Goods Complaints Report.
- US DOT Household Goods Survey: Statistical data on average moving costs, shipment weights, and consumer complaints.
- Published provider rate schedules: Direct pricing from U-Haul, Penske, Budget, PODS, 1-800-PACK-RAT, United Van Lines, Atlas Van Lines, and Mayflower Transit.
- US Census Bureau: Data on annual moving volume, seasonal patterns, and migration trends.
